EMMA WHITE

Interview with second year emerging stylist, Emma White, of White Gold Boutique salon, located in Brisbane, Australia. 

Where did you study/where are you studying?

I’m currently studying at the Brisbane School of Hairdressing. 

What made you want to become a hairdresser?

I always grew up experimenting with different hairstyles/colours, on my own hair and my four younger sisters’ hair. Then a couple of years ago I recieved the opportunity to do a few friends hair for their weddings, which led me to fall in love with doing hair even more!

What’s one tip you can share with younger/want-to-be hairdressers?

Don’t give up!! I called around and dropped off my resume to over 30 salons until I got an interview and found somewhere to start my apprenticeship. It’s hard work and long hours but completely worth it when your first client leaves the salon flicking her hair and loving herself sick!

Who’s your idol?

Where did you study/where are you studying?

Matters In Gray (MIG)

What made you want to become a hairdresser?

I’ve always been a very creative person. I love to paint, do arts and crafts, and get creative with anything to do with colour. It became apparent to me that hairdressing encompasses all of those things and I have never looked back.

What’s one tip you can share with younger/want-to-be hairdressers?

It’s not all glamorous but if you stick it out it’s worth it in the end.

Who’s your idol?

It’s forever changed just like the industry but at the moment I’m vibing @ameliajanehair

GEORGIA M

Interview with emerging stylist, Georgia, of Tease and Bristle.

Where did you study/where are you studying?

Tease and Bristle in Townsville, Queensland.

I have been working there for a year and a half now and I have learnt so much working along side My boss Erin and the team.

What made you want to become a hairdresser?

Watching hair tutorials from a young age made me fall with in love with the creativity of hairdressing.What’s one tip you can share with younger/want-to-be hairdressers?

What’s one tip you can share with younger/want-to-be hairdressers?

One tip I’d give to a future apprentice is to get a head by starting in school as a school base apprenticeship. By starting young you will be a qualified hairdresser at a young age.

Who’s your idol?

My idol would be @ameliajane as she is super inspiring. I’ve been following her hair page on Instagram for a while now and I love how bright she gets blondes.

MADDI PHIPPS

Interview with emerging stylist, Maddi Phipps, of Louise Richmond Hair, a luxury salon located in Sydney. 

Where did you study/where are you studying?

I studied at TAFE NSW in Gymea, Sydney.

What made you want to become a hairdresser?

I actually started as a makeup artist doing special events and formal makeup.The head of the makeup, hair and bauty department at my TAFE campus really encouraged me to try hairdressing and I fell in love with it instantly. I love talking to people and making them feel amazing! I love that every client that sits in front of you is a different canvas thatrequires different techniques, formulas and approaches! 

What’s one tip you can share with younger/want-to-be hairdressers?

EDUCATION! Educate yourself constantly. For me, TAFE was an amazing way to gain a lot of knowledge and practical experience. Since I’ve finished TAFE I’ve been attending workshops and classes through Redken. Not all education has to be through workshops or classroom based teaching, I’m constantly watching videos of different techniques and formulations on Instagram and taking them straight to my dolls head to practice and perfect!

Who’s your idol?

Although I don’t have one particular idol. I’m constantly being inspired by posts from all around the world, including Redken, Vogue Magazine & Guido Palau. I also love following posts from Sheree Knobel and Tribe Connect..

SARAH KATE

Interview with apprentice and hairdresser, Sarah Kate, of Allure Hair Beauty.

Where did you study/where are you studying?

I’m studying at clipjoint education.

What made you want to become a hairdresser?

I was so intrigued by how colouring hair can change someone’s total appearance and I love making people feel good about themselves, just as simple as getting a haircut can make someone feel more confident. 😊

What’s one tip you can share with younger/want-to-be hairdressers?

If I could give one tip to younger hairdressers it would be stay determined because everything will fall into place in time. 😊

Who’s your idol?

My idol would defiantly have to be Kirsty Anne.

IMMY 

Interview with Immy, apprentice of My Lab Hair and Beauty in the United Kingdom. 

Where did you study/where are you studying?

I started studying at Stamford college, in Lincolnshire. I worked at a salon in Stamford and have recently moved to my current salon MY.LAB HAIR & BEAUTY LTD.

What made you want to become a hairdresser?

I wanted to do hairdressing knowing it could lead me into so many opportunities. People at school used to say it might lead me nowhere, however It was something I felt I wanted to do and prove them all wrong!

What’s one tip you can share with younger/want-to-be hairdressers?

If someone gives you an opportunity to better yourself, take it with both hands and go for it, as long as it feels right! At my first salon I felt I wasn’t progressing as I was just a cleaner. As a junior stylist, it’s horrible when all you want to do is learn. I got given an opportunity where I am currently working, and I nearly didn’t take it. I have been here since July and my confidence within the industry has grown massively. I’ve been given a chance where I can grow as a hairdresser and be taught to the standards I need to be at.

Who’s your idol?

My Idol is my Boss, April! She gave me the chance I needed and has helped me further my career hugely. She is a colour specialist within the salon, but I love how she is constantly learning and happily wants to share her skills to all of us at the salon

Sheona Hinkley

Where did you study/where are you studying?

I completed my Cert 3 at Tafe Illawarra, West Wollongong, NSW. 

What made you want to become a hairdresser?

I became a hairdresser because I saw it as a career that combines the freedom of creativity with the structure of science, which sounded like a great balance to match my interests! Once I got to add in the satisfaction of transforming someone's hair and watching them fall in love with a part of themselves that I got to create, I was hooked.

What’s one tip you can share with younger/want-to-be hairdressers?

Confidence will come just trust your training and don’t be afraid to give it a go.

Who’s your idol?

I’m inspired by so many people, however, the person I look up to the most in the hairdressing world is my old boss, Amy, she taught me so much - not just in hairdressing techniques but in the way she built relationships with her clients and treated me, her employee, with so much kindness and respect. She is an amazing hairdresser and business owner who I aspire to be like.

 

Bianca Louise

Interview with blonde lover and emerging stylist, Bianca, of Cropped Hair and Beauty. 

Where did you study/where are you studying?

I completed my Tafe course at Box Hill Tafe.

What made you want to become a hairdresser?

Like I mentioned previously, I absolutely love styling as before I started hairdressing I loved the idea of doing bridal hair - I was really lucky in the way I got my job! I kind of fell into the industry as I hadn’t planned to follow hair but I thought ‘what’s the worst that could happen?’ - and here we are today ha-ha!

 

What’s one tip you can share with younger/want-to-be hairdressers?

One tip I would share would be it’s tough work, long days and weekends involved but if you stick with it through all the tough times you get to become someone people love to see. You get to make them feel unlike anything else!

 

Who’s your idol?

I have a few girls I love to follow and watch on Instagram. The work Jess Lewis can produce is amazing but for me styling is a huge part of the job and by far my favourite and I love being able to learn off my boss (Ash @updosbyash)
